Blogs, Facebook and Twitter – What’s the point?

So, what is the point.

Business owners often wonder if Social Media is worth their time.  Does any of the following sound familiar?

“We created a Facebook and Twitter business profile a while back, tweeted and posted for a while and really did not see the results we were looking for.”

Many businesses think that if they build a social presence then people will come. This is not only wrong but can hurt your business. People aren’t impressed with outdated or shell accounts; they want interaction, information and life. Social Media has the word “Social” in it for a reason. Just showing up to a networking event, grabbing a drink and sitting in the corner will not get you business.  You have talk and give people the opportunity to get to know you.  Consumers want to work with companies that interact with them.  Yes, having Social Networking sites with your business’s name on them will allow people to find you. However, once they do and all they see are vacant rooms of what they thought would be a community, they will be disappointed and move on.

“We started it because we know others are doing it but haven’t kept it up because our client and prospect demographic really do not use social media.”

Reality check… Your clients and prospects are using Facebook and Twitter.  It is time to start giving your audience more credit.  They are not one-dimensional and they do have likes and interests.  Oh yeah, and a lot of their friends check into Facebook on a regular basis and take an interest in their interests.  Social Media takes word-of-mouth marketing to the next level.

“Yeah but… Our clients average age is 46 and up… they do not use Facebook or Twitter”

Please, my mother-in-law is 63 and she has more friends on Facebook than I do.

“We are uncomfortable with social media because we are worried our brand will become diluted.”

Even if you are not participating in social media, always remember,  people are talking about you.  Thus, it can be argued that by not participating your brand is at more risk.  We help our clients monitor what is being said about their brand and participate in the conversations, good or bad.  When you think about it, what an incredible opportunity to monitor and channel your brand.

“We have a website, why would we need a Facebook or Twitter page?”

Our Clients know from experience that consistently creating relevant and engaging content that’s seeded with keywords will help boost your search ranking and help you get found by prospects. It will also allow you to tell your own brand’s story more richly and consistently than any other kind of marketing or Media. Social Media Marketing is a key component to a successful SEO campaign and essential to higher rankings for your website.

So do you “get the point”.  Social Media is here to stay, it’s where your costumers talk with each other and it helps boost your rankings in the search engines.  Do not live in the past because it is comfortable.

Local SEO… Grow your business Local!

Have you noticed?  Google Services and Local Search Results are pushing traditional organic results down.
Many businesses are feeling the pain as Google is taking advantage of its online search dominance to become a content hub, rather than just the Search Destination it once was.  The results have been upsetting to businesses who have been seeing their webpages pushed down in the results by Google’s own services.  For example, TripAdvisor, told the Wall Street Journal that their traffic had declined since Google has become more active in the local review space. Stephen Kaufer, Chief Executive at TripAdvisor told the newspaper that “Google does seem to be chasing us and I don’t like it one bit.”

At ThirdView Internet Marketing, we take a different View.  Ever since the inception of the internet it has been an ever-changing vast ocean of opportunity. Just because what once worked no longer works as well, does not mean we throw up our hands.  We view this as a huge opportunity and have been seeing incredible results for our clients by effectively positioning them in Local Search Results.  On almost any search with a city name, zip code, or location Google will display a map that takes up about three inches of valuable real estate on their search results. Companies listed in the slots next to the map (A, B, D etc) have an incredible advantage over those who are not listed. Even if you have a top organic ranking, your company is about four inches down on the page.  The key is to get listed in the first organic position and also have your company show up on the initial map provided by Google.  This would be equivalent to having a full-page ad in the yellow pages, that is if people were still using yellow pages.

For example, we were recently hired by a residential and commercial service company who has been in business since the 1950’s.  They were ranked fairly well for a few keywords in the engines and were hoping to use our firm to rank higher on page one for both existing and new keywords – Organic SEO.  We were able to get them ranked nicely for a number of new keywords. With this said, we also plugged them in locally with Google, Yahoo, Bing and 25+ other top local sites – Local SEO.  Interestingly enough, thus far, they have benefited most from our local efforts and a good portion of their web page views and inbound calls are coming from the local results. We know this because we track the results, which is another important topic we will address in our next blog.  Without proper tracking, how could one possibly know both how to allocate their budget and grow the return on investment.

Organic SEO, Social Media and PPC should still be a part of any companies marketing strategy, however,
if you are not currently positioning yourself in the local results – start immediately.  There is really no excuse for missing out on the opportunity for top first page results without paying for clicks.

We truly believe Local Search is the wave you want to catch for 2011.

Good Luck!

3 Simple Local SEO Tips

Improving your Local SEO Rankings is a great way to build a successful internet marketing campaign. I have added a few of our favorite concepts that we share with our customers.

1. Ask your clients for reviews.
Most customers do not give reviews unless prompted and it is made easy.  Make sure your customers are aware  of where you can be reviewed, provide links and do it often.  Sites like Kudzu, CitySearch and Merchant Circle (to name a few) welcome you directing your customer reviews to their site.  A simple “We appreciate your business and value your opinion…  We’d love it if you gave a review of our business on Yahoo Local/Bing/Google” on your email communications, invoices and other customer forms will do wonders.  Reviews of any kind give your business more credibility.

2. Bad review can be good.
No company is without imperfections.  A few bad reviews are common place among seasoned companies and they have a way of making the good ones shine brighter.  Users are most often savvy enough to know something is not right when they see only ultra positive reviews.

3. Include a local phone number.
Be sure to publish your local phone number in text and avoid including within an image. 800 numbers are also a good idea, but on their own they don’t give any local identity.

Bonus Tip
When you look at your your site on the GOOGLE search engine. Look on the left side column and change the search preference location.

  • Denver, CO
  • Auto-detected
Change location and then you can see how your site shows up locally.

Incentivize Your Team to Blog

More than ever blogging is and should be a vital component to your marketing efforts, for both search and social media reasons.

Our Clients know from experience that consistently creating relevant and engaging content that’s seeded with keywords will help boost your search ranking and help you get found by prospects. It will also allow you to tell your own brand’s story more richly and consistently than any other kind of marketing or Media.

However, we also know from experience that maintaining a blog that’s consistently interesting and relevant isn’t an easy task. It’s a challenge to create consistently awesome blog posts and it’s a challenge to earn the attention of an audience.

With this said, It’s a lot easier to maintain a robust, active blog when you have many contributors.  What a great opportunity to allow your employees to participate and come together as a team.

So how do you motivate employees from within your own organization to contribute?

 ThirdView Suggests the following:

 1.  Appoint a blog manager. You need a single person for whom blog management is part of their his/her job description, and. That person possibly has incentive pay tied toward meeting the stated blog objectives, which might be around certain targeted employees participation goals, managing a targeted company blogging schedule, marketing the company blog and incentives to employees,  creating participation incentive programs, reviewing, editing and approving articles … and so on.

 2.  Make blogging an honor. Blogging gives your employees visibility within your company,  with your audience and a forum to for saying their piece. So make sure that you regard both the blog and the people who participate with respect. Participation and getting posted should carry some prestige; it should feel like a privilege to get posted. ThirdView recommends, when appropriate, to give employees a photo and a byline. The photo humanizes the post for your readers, certainly, but also highlights and promotes your employees

 3.  The less complicated the better. Providing some sort of template isn’t necessary for every blogger, of course, but it can help giving newbie or nervous bloggers the necessary blog “training wheels” to create their first post or two might help them to get going.  ThirdView has plenty of tools to help everyone get involved.

 4.  Make it fun. Blogs create a unique opportunity to showcase the people who make your company what it is, and perhaps show a bit of their personalities and quirks—you know, the stuff that makes them human and interesting.  I don’t use that word “opportunity” lightly, because most company blogs are vastly underused as a way to talk to a vast population of customers or prospects directly in an engaging, interesting way. Even if the goals of your blog are dead serious, it’s good to lighten up every once in a while.

 5.  Make sure to reward frequent contributors to the blog.  Some of our clients give $100 gift cards to those whose post volume or quality goes above and beyond the norm, or provides smaller rewards (like $5-$25 gift cards) to encourage more participation.  The idea is to get creative and reward employee participation.

  6.  Communicate business results. Make sure your whole company understands how the blog feeds into the larger picture: What the role that the blog plays in your customer development, or efforts to grow your business. This ties back is related to defining goals for your blog, certainly. But it also means that you regularly share about your progress toward those goals on a regular basis: how well you are meeting them, the growth of subscribers, what topics resonate with your readers, and so on.

Above all else, it is essential to put a plan in place.  A blog editorial plan helps direct content creation for business blogs with multiple contributors. It keeps writers on track with content that will most likely meet customer and business needs.  A planned blogging editorial schedule also helps when writers run into dry periods.  Yet another benefit is that it creates a set of expected editorial for readers. It creates an element of predictability readers can count on to return to week after week.

For example, Mondays might focus on a message from the CEO or other business leader. By the way, if they won’t write it for you, call them and record a discussion on the topic. Then transcribe that recording into a blog post.  Wednesdays might be a tips post about your product or service and Fridays might be a news roundup for the week.  Tuesdays and Thursdays can be wildcards or days where you don’t post at all.

A few ideas for creative content:

  • Highlighting key staff members
  • Message from the CEO
  • State of the industry posts
  • Linking to breaking news in the industry
  • Polls
  • Announcements of new products
  • Highlighting key clients/customers
  • Tips on how to use products
  • FAQs
  • Live blogging from industry events
  • Submission from employee
  • Seasonal tips from your industry

As time goes on, you can experiment with different schedules to see what works best. Creating a schedule and executing on it does add time, however,  it does so in a way that makes your business blogging effort a lot more efficient and the dividends will be more than plentiful.

How To Attract People To Your Web Site

It’s all about traffic, conversions and sales these days. Without traffic your website is dead! So let’s talk about tips for getting people to visit your site. Plus how about you give them something as well!

1. Give people a free subscription to your e-zine.  Almost everyone is publishing a e-zine these days so it’s important to give something extra with the  free subscription. You could offer a free gift or advertising when people subscribe.

2. Provide your visitors with free content. Your content will be more attractive to your visitors if it’s up-to-date or original. You could also offer people the option to reprint the content in their e-zine or web site.

3. Offer a free online directory. The directory could be full of interesting ebooks, e-zines, web sites etc. If people find your directory to be a valuable resource they will visit it over and over.

4. Give your visitors a free ebook. You could also include your own ad in the ebook and allow other people to give it away. If you don’t want to take the time to write one, you could ask other writers permission to use their articles.

5. Hold free online classes or seminars. They could be held in your web site’s chat room. The idea of “live” information will definitely entice people to visit your web site. You will become known as an expert on the topic.

6. Give visitors a free entry into your contest or sweepstakes. The prizes should be something of interest or value to your visitors. Most people who enter will continually revisit your web site to get the results.

7. Let visitors download free software. It could be freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software directory. If you created the software, include your ad inside and let other people give it away.

8. Offer free online services or utilities from your web site. They could be search engine submitting, copy writing proofreading etc. The service or utility should be helpful to your target audience.

9. Give free consulting to people who visit your web site. You could offer your knowledge via e-mail or by telephone. People will consider this a huge value because consulting fees can be very expensive.

10. Give your visitors a free membership to your online club. People want to belong to something, why not your online club. You could also give away a free e-zine for club members only.
